 GMFAA’s Hottest Campaigns in 2018:

As we mobilise communities and lobby governments, our ongoing work included the successful tour by Jonathan R Latham, PhD, co-founder and Executive Director of the Bioscience Resource Project, who spoke on the risks of GM at a wide range of events in 5 states. Watch the Sydney event “Strong Gut, Strong Body, Strong Planet” here.

Dedicated volunteers continued to contact companies to build our database of GM-Free labelled products, while researching for the Truefood Guide, due for launch in early 2019. More and more families are searching for GM-free products for safe and ethical eating.

DE-REGULATION of NEW GM delayed – for now…!

The GMFAA and Friends of the Earth welcomed the rejection by state governments of a Federal Government proposal to deregulate a range of new genetic engineering techniques, known as “gene editing”. Thanks to great work by many campaigners, State and Federal Ministers agreed that further consideration of the potential risks posed by gene editing was needed before a decision could be made. Email your minister to Say NO! to new GM techniques

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN GM Ban under threat, despite being secured until 2025!

The South Australian government is holding a Review into the current state ban on growing GM crops. Market benefits are being assessed, as well as economic impacts. Many GM-free advocates made submissions before the closing date. Watch this space for outcomes of the Review, due early in 2019.

GROUNDBREAKING Parliamentary Inquiry continues in Western Australia!

The Western Australian Legislative Council is holding an “Inquiry into mechanisms for compensation for economic loss to farmers in Western Australia caused by contamination by genetically modified material”.  All submissions are online and make interesting reading. This is the first time a government has fully assessed the problems caused by commercial release of GM crop varieties alongside non-GM crops.

MONSANTO AND GLYPHOSATE start to unravel around the globe!

The biggest news this year was the court finding that Monsanto was liable for terminally ill DeWayne Johnson’s cancer, awarding him $289 million in damages. The US jury agreed that Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller caused his cancer and that the corporation failed to warn him of the health hazards from exposure. The verdict was later upheld but compensation reduced to $78 million.

Watch the “Monsanto Papers” Four Corners programme here.

All over Australia, councils are re-assessing the risk of glyphosate-based weed control, and implementing alternative strategies, joining many councils Australia-wide which have banned it already. You can join the growing movement by downloading the form below and petitioning your council to stop spraying poisons on our streets, parks and playgrounds.
